I have just found out about the newest book about Tolkien that is soon to be published (early July) and thought you might like a little information on it. It is written by Alex Lewis and Elizabeth Currie, and is going to be published by ADC Publications.
About the book:
Lewis and Currie continue their ground-breaking studies with an examination of Tolkien’s most personal story, the Tale of Beren and Lúthien in its various forms. It is analysed from the early version in the Book of Lost Tales, through the incomparable poetry of the Lay of Leithian, through to beyond the Silmarillion version and the ideas that Tolkien was working towards the end of his life. The astonishing and powerful connections between Beren and Lúthien’s tale and the Arthurian legends in their various forms are examined and give a fascinating glimpse into the world of medieval literature which Professor Tolkien knew and loved so well. Find out how Tevildo Demon-Prince of Cats came into the tale and then was dropped in favour of other concepts, how Tolkien pondered over whether Beren should be a mortal man or an immortal elf. And throughout these tales run the foundations of Arthurian Story in a fascinating way. The connections that Lewis and Currie pursue lead to an elegant and original explanation of the creative purpose behind the Book of Lost Tales as a concept, and also give compelling insight as to how this related to the concept inherent within the Silmarillion and Tolkien’s Legendarium itself. In Epic Realms of Tolkien, learn also of the true significance of the Eriol / Aelfwine character and his adventures and deeds.
Lewis and Currie will continue their investigations into the links in Tolkien’s writings with the Arthurian tradition in Part Two.

We have recently written quite a lot about the biography of J.R.R. Tolkien and his wife Edith. Today we want to get you interested in some new bits of information. Piotr Kaniewski, better known among the Polish Tolkien admirers as “Ring”, has sent us a very interesting article about a ship that carried Mabel Tolkien and her sons from South Africa to England. That ship has a colourful history, although it has basically nothing to do with Tolkien.

The SS Guelph was launched at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, and (the first titbit!) it was the same shipyard where the famous Titanic was built. What’s more, the Titanic was equipped with exactly the same windows and passenger benches as the Guelph. There is some other link joining this ship with the Titanic’s tragic story, but we will go back to it later. The ship’s name came from Guelph, a city in Canada. The SS Guelph was 347 feet 9 inches (106 m) long, with a tonnage of 4,917 GRT, and a top speed of 11.5 knots (21 km/h; 13 mph). Przeczytaj resztę wpisu »

On March 22, we celebrated another wedding anniversary of Ronald and Edith Tolkien, and a commemorative entry was made for the occasion. A few weeks later I visited the Catholic Church of Saint Mary Immaculate again. I had a mission to fulfil – I wished to see and photograph the marriage certificate of Ronald and Edith.
It was around 4.30 pm, April 2, when I rang at the door of the parsonage of the Catholic Church of Saint Mary Immaculate located at 45 West Street, Warwick. After a while the door opened, and a priest appeared. It was Canon E.M. Stewart. I told him that I had learned on the parish website that visitors might find in the records an entry on the wedding of Mr and Mrs Tolkien. The priest then smiled and ushered me in. I told him my name and what brought me to Warwick. My host asked me to wait in the church office; he left and returned a moment later, carrying in his hands a fair-sized book. He opened it right to the page I’d asked him for, and this is what I saw:

Anno 1916 die 22 mensis Martii Ego Gulielmus J. Murphy in Matrimonio conjunxi Joannem Ronald Reuel Tolkien ex Stafford (Brocton Camp) filium Arthuri Reuel Tolkien, et Editham Bratt ex Warwick filiam Frederici Bratt.

Somewhere in London…

It’s of course a joke. More can be seen here. But remember that Elendilion has news in English too.

Let us start with a simple definition of the key term:
Distributism is a political doctrine which rejects both monopoly capitalism and socialism of the all-powerful state (communism), perceived as the systems that are equally restrictive as far as people’s individualism and ownership are concerned. It calls for the establishment of the prosperity society by promoting public ownership in the fields of industry, trade and agriculture. The doctrine was formulated by such conservative thinkers as Gilbert Keith Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc who were greatly influenced by Catholic social teaching (articulated in Pope Leo XIII’s encyclical Rerum Novarum).

Many of the Tolkien scholars (among others Joseph Pearce) remarked that Tolkien – a great admirer of journalism of Chesterton, and a devout Catholic – had demonstrated many of the distributist ideas in his description of the economy and society of the Shire, and also of other free countries of Middle-earth. (Concerning the influence of Chesterton on Tolkien’s life and works click here).
We are glad to provide you with information about Tolkien-related topics to be found in the distributist bulletin The ChesterBelloc Mandate, where you will find an excellent interview with a Tolkien’s biographer, Joseph Pearce, entitled Small is still beautiful.

It all began with a play. Its author, Adam “Lord Ya” Kuziów, would put it on together with a group of his friend-actors in local theatres, cinemas, and during outdoor events. The play is entitled Do Rivendell i bez powrotu (To Rivendell and not back again)… The full text of the play can be found in the e-book series Biblioteczka Elendilich (The Elendili Library, no. 3, with very interesting illustrations in PDF format). If you are interested in the presentation of the whole series of Adam’s plays, and the discussion on it you will find both in The Elendili Forum, in this topic. As for another part of the series mentioned, we wrote about it here.

Then, during one of the Tolk Folk meetings traditionally held in Bielawa an idea came up to film that particular play. Afterwards the idea was put into effect, and so a movie
with the same title as the play – Do Rivendell i bez powrotu – was shot. The Tolk Folk website has kept us informed about the successive stages of the film production. At the end of September 2007 the shooting was over. October met us with the film being edited, continuing with the soundtrack being worked on the next month, which is expected to come to an end in December. The organizer of Tolk Folk meetings, a Śląkfa prize-winner Jarek “Elek” Florczak informed us today that the film crew had just dealt with the so-called “sub-synchro”, that is sound synchronization of the voice parts. The producers are doing their best to make it possible for the To Rivendell and not back again movie to be premiered
on 3 January 2009, the date marking the anniversary of Tolkien’s birth. Of course there were some problems during the shooting, but we’re all keeping our fingers crossed and are sure that we will be able to watch the movie in Bielawa precisely on the 117th anniversary of Professor Tolkien’s birth. In the meantime you can visit The Tolk Folk website to find some camerawork of the movie. Two pieces of it have actually appeared in this topic…
We’ve got another important piece of news concerning the next year’s 11th Tolk Folk meeting: Elek has told us that the meeting will in all probability take place between 9th and 12th July 2009.

In Middle-earth, children are a sign of blessing from Eru. For there life is seen as a blessing. It is simply because those whom we can call the Voronwi Eruo, the Faithful of the One, are creators of the true civilization of life, and strongly opposed to the scheming of the Enemy, a tyrant of the culture of death… The Laws and customs among the Eldar, an excellent text written by Tolkien (and published posthumously in Morgoth’s Ring, the tenth of the 12-volume series The History of Middle-earth), as well as other writings of the Legendarium show a world of families, of marriages and children; a world where life is a gift and responsibility that should be accepted, never rejected. In Middle-earth, the ability to give the gift of life to others is treated as a blessing, whereas to take life – by acts of suicide or murder – means that Evil has been involved.

A little Boromir in the womb of Finduilas, 3.5 months after conception
What I find especially beautiful in the above-mentioned text is the highest respect for the life of a rational being, from conception until natural death. I also regard as important the fact that the Faithful (whether Elves or Men, Dwarves or Ents) believe their offspring to be a gift. Przeczytaj resztę wpisu »
