Zaprzyjaźniony serwis Ostatniego Przyjaznego Domu przekazuje nam informację o kolejnym nieznanym liście prof. Tolkiena (informacja z OPD). To niezwykle ciekawa korespondencja z artystką, która tak mocno związała swoją twórczość z książkami J.R.R. Tolkiena i C. S. Lewisa – z Pauline Baynes. List odkryto przy okazji aukcji domu aucyjnego Christie’s z 3 lipca 2007 r. (uzyskał tam cenę 7800 funtów!). Oto opis aukcji. List pochodził z kolekcji słynnego zbieracza, Albina Schrama.

The most important event in Tolkienian Poland this summer was the 9th Tolk Folk, the annual Tolkien festival in Bielawa, Lower Silesia, Poland. Waiting for the English translation of the festival report we want to inform you that the event was gorgeous, splendid, and magnificent! Famous Tolkienian musician Adam Klein was the guest of honour, and the event was full of his music. The main part was the reconstruction of the Siege of Gondolin with Polish and Czech participants. Looking for photos and films from Tolk Folk? See here (Marigold’s films and pics), here (Telperion’s pics), here (Elendili) and here (Hobbiton).

‚Lord of the Rings’ author JRR Tolkien spent time in Galway (Ireland) while writing his masterpiece, it has been revealed.
Tolkien was an external examiner of English at NUI, Galway (then UCG) on several occasions during the 1950s. While in Ireland he stayed at the home of his fellow Professor of English, Diarmuid Murphy, whose daughter Rose recently spoke fondly of the „gentle, observant man” who visited her family during the 1950s and became a close friend.
Rose was a teenager when Tolkien first visited, but during his later visits she would have been a student at NUIG, and it’s possible that he marked her papers. Although she cannot remember many „serious conversations” with the Oxford don, Rose told the Galway Independent that he was very interested in nature, and hated any blot of industry on the landscape, a passion reflected in the last book of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The fantasy writer and scholar of Old English was also awarded an honorary doctorate by the National University of Ireland in 1954, the same year his seminal work was published.
According to Professor Kevin Barry, Dean of Arts and a former Head of English at NUIG, Tolkien was well known as an „extraordinary storyteller”, and he was always welcome, due to his „incredible fund of stories and gossip, not just about fantasy but also about his university colleagues”.

Silmarillion Writers Guild:
As many probably know by now, SWG has declared the month of July in honor of the House of Fëanor. The response to the initial Seven in ’07 project was overwhelming, and the results can be found here. However, the House of Fëanor–and its influenced on the Tolkien fan community–goes beyond Fëanor and his seven sons, and we’d be remiss if we ignored Nerdanel and Celebrimbor.
As before, we are seeking short fiction, poems, excerpts of longer fiction and poems, and artwork about Nerdanel and Celebrimbor. Those of you who have sent material about these characters already do not need to send them again (though a gentle reminder to the absentminded webmaster is never a bad thing). Seven in ’07 seeks to show the diversity of creative works inspired by the House of Fëanor, and we invite all Tolkien fan-writers and -artists to consider sending in work for inclusion in this project.
Currently, we are seeking the following:
* Short fiction under 200 words about Nerdanel and Celebrimbor.
* Short poems under 20 lines about Nerdanel and Celebrimbor.
* Excerpts of longer works (fiction or poems) about Nerdanel and Celebrimbor. The excerpts should not exceed 200 words.
* Visual art (drawings, paintings, et cetera) focusing on Nerdanel and Celebrimbor. The longest side of the artwork should not exceed 700 pixels.
More information, deadline and contact e-mail on SWG site:
http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/sevenin07/announcement.php
Jednym słowem – SWG nadal celebruje twórczość inspirowaną Domem Fëanora i teraz poszukuje materiałów związanych z Nerdanelą i Celebrimborem. Czas na nadsyłanie prac do 24 lipca 2007.

I know there were many radio shows about the latest of Tolkien’s publishinings, The Children of Hurin, but I was surprised when I came across one on the main Irish radio network, RTÉ (Radio Telefis Eireann). It is an interview by Dave Fanning with Professor Terry Dolan (University College Dublin) and Allan Corr (RTÉ) mainly about the new book, but also a few interesting facts about Tolkien himself and Tolkien connections. For example, did you know that Tolkien influenced numerous 1970’s progrock bands or that he married his wife because she spoke a specific Birmingham dialect?
The interview is not overly-academic – it remains light-hearted and easy with the added insight of Professor Dolan who has previously interviewed Christopher Tolkien and remains a devout scholar of Tolkein and his works. It is also warm as it follows the typical Irish humour (at least I think so) and offers a refreshing take on Tolkien. Have a listen for yourself and let me know your thougths as I’m interested to hear from you. To listen, just click here (p.s. you need Real Player to access it).

I’m passing you SWG news in the name of Dawn Felagund:
As part of a special publication for the month of July, the Silmarillion Writers’ Guild is seeking short fiction, poems, excerpts of longer fiction and poems, and artwork for inclusion in a compilation about the House of Fëanor. Seven in ’07 seeks to show the diversity of creative works inspired by the House of Fëanor, and we invite all Tolkien fan-writers and -artists to consider sending in work for inclusion in this project.
We are seeking the following:
* Short fiction under 200 words about the House of Fëanor.
* Short poems under 20 lines about the House of Fëanor.
* Excerpts of longer works (fiction or poems) about the House of Fëanor. The excerpts should not exceed 200 words.
* Visual art (drawings, paintings, et cetera) focusing on the House of Fëanor.
Currently, we have compilations planned for Fëanor and each of his seven sons. Compilations for Nerdanel and Celebrimbor may also follow, so creative work about any of these characters is welcome.
The deadline for submissions is Sunday, 24 June 2007. We will let you know after that which of your submissions we will be including in the compilation, and the compilation will be released on 1 July 2007.

Gondolin – the city founded by Turgon – the one of the Noldor – hidden in the Tumladen Valley, guarded by the eagles. There was only one entrance leading to the city strongly guided by the residents. Unfortunately, envy and the will of possession among the elves caused the fall of Gondolin When the secret way has been given away, Melkor’s armies supported by the Dragons and the Barlogs destroyed the city. The ruler has also been killed.
You also can act out this history… The topic of the IX TOLK FOLK is preparation and taking part in an open-area performance „The Fall of Gondolin”. Anybody can take part in it. The organizer secures more part of costumes and props. On the website you can load down an incidental music for the performance. Przeczytaj resztę wpisu »

Hyalma (Moscow), our co-redactor presents only here (and in print in next Simbelmynë #28) her analysis of the text of The Children of Húrin compared with The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales and HoMe. This is a very interesting list of divergences which should be known to everyone who is interested in the similarities and differencies between these books. Thanks to Hyalma’s work you can find out what new can be found in the newest Tolkien’s book. Welcolme!
List of divergences between CH and S, UT, HoMe (Word document in English!)
In her document Hyalma writes:
Here I marked in red all the divergences (that I could find) between CH and published Silmarillion/Narn. The pieces marked in green are absent in S/UT, but are present in Grey Annals.
