The Silmarillion – Thirty Years On: a survey in English

It’s a translation of my survey in Polish of the newly published book The Silmarillion – Thirty Years On.

1. Rhona Beare, A Mythology for England

The author compares the Greek mythology with the Anglo-Saxon one and comes to a conclusion that the motives and emotions of the Mediterranean myths aren’t similar to the motives and emotions of the myths of Albion at all; and the main reason for this is the climate. Tolkien drew his inspiration from the legends of the lands which are misty and cold. She examines also the motive of the „green big dragon” in the creation of Tolkien (did you know, for example, that Chrysofilax was green according to the illustrations by Pauline Baynes, approved by Tolkien himself?). The word „stonc” in Beowulf (þa se wyrm onwoc, wroht wæs geniwad; stonc æfter stane, 2285), that Tolkien, contrary to others scholars, understood as „smell, scent” – and maybe from there comes Smaug’s extraordinary sense of smell. She compares also the history of Númenor to the history of the Flood, and the personality of Elendil to that of Noah. She examines rather minutely the origins and the etymology of the name Earendel/Earendil and she mentions that the motive of Two Trees is borrowed from a Greek roman of Alexandre translated in XII century in Anglosaxon by the means of the alliterative verse. Wywiad z Pieterem Collierem na OPD

Zdjęcie Petera Colliera z The Tolkien LibraryZapraszamy do serwisu Ostatni Przyjazny Dom aby zapoznać się z interesującym korespondencyjnym wywiadem, jaki został przeprowadzony przez redaktorów OPD z Pieterem Collierem, redaktorem często u nas cytowanej strony The Tolkien Library. Pieter, niezwykle ciekawa postać w fandomie tolkienowskim, kolekcjoner i znawca tolkienaliów, opowiada o wielu interesujących sprawach dotyczących jego pasji. Pytania do wywiadu przygotowali „X” i „Adam”, na język polski przełożyli go „X” i „Tallis”, a całość koordynował „Osse”. Na OPD znajdziecie dwie wersje wywiadu: po angielsku i po polsku.

Za to warto walczyć…

Plakat rekrutacyjny z I wojny światowej - nadesłał TAOTadeusz A. Olszański nadesłał nam ciekawy brytyjski plakat rekrutacyjny z czasów I wojny światowej.

Grafika J.R.R. Tolkiena, przedstawiająca Hobbiton

Westron (English):

This interesting First World War recruitment poster (above) sent to us by Tadeusz A. Olszanski (TAO) shows a soldier pointing at a rustical English landscape and asking: „Isn’t this worth fighting for?”. TAO writes that the way the landscape is presented there and the colours bring to mind J.R.R. Tolkien’s picture of Hobbiton.

Is it possible that Tolkien was inspired by the poster he could see during the Great War?

Relevant Across Cultures: Visions of Connectedness and World Citizenship in Modern Fantasy for Young Readers

First Call for Papers

“We need a story, a myth that does what the traditional religious stories did: it must explain. It must satisfy our hunger for a why. Why does the world exist? Why are we here? […] It must provide some sort of framework for understanding why some things are good and others are bad. […] We need a myth, we need a story because it’s no good persuading people to commit themselves to an idea on the grounds that it’s reasonable.”
(Philip Pullman, “The Republic of Heaven” 665-666)

Works of literature are distinctive to the specific culture which produced them and embody that culture’s place- and time-bound consciousness. However, many of the themes and topics in literature are relevant across cultures. The well-being of children, the importance of family, the need to foster human relationships, and the right for happiness are some among the many concerns central to most cultures. The 30th Anniversary of the Silmarillion Project

tnsilmarillioncover2004qi7.jpg The 30th Anniversary of the Silmarillion Project

In the name of Lady Elleth and Qitian I’m passing you project news:

Like the subject line says, a book we all love is nearing its 30th publication anniversary – 09/15/1977 marks the day the Silmarillion was first published, and now, 30 years later, we need your help to celebrate!

„I would draw some of the great tales in fullness, and leave many only placed in the scheme, and sketched. The cycles should be linked to a majestic whole, and yet leave scope for other minds and hands, wielding paint and music and drama. Absurd.”
~J.R.R.Tolkien in a letter to Milton Waldman, (probably) in late 1951
